Fulton County will soon have the necessary software designed to better manage and control the numerous projects it has undertaken.
“What this software will do is improve our project management in a coordinated way, so Fulton County would have the necessary IT (information technology) people and resources to meet the needs of any project,” said District 2 Fulton Commissioner Bob Ellis, also the interim chairman.
At its Sept. 6 meeting, the board of commissioners voted 5-0 to purchase project portfolio software in the amount of $192,310 from Stellar Services, a New York-based company with an office in Atlanta, to better manage its resources and manpower with regard to county projects that were either being considered, already planned or underway.
According to Ellis, the county had an IT assessment done recently which evolved around meeting what he described as the “different challenges within our IT structure.”
He said the firm that completed the assessment recommended the county organize what Ellis called a “road map of different types of things we ought to look at in our IT program to better manage our projects.”
Although this software application does not impact Fulton residents directly, Ellis said it would help assure them the county would be able to deliver on projects that would be considered more critical in nature.
“This software would help push those projects up in importance so they would be completed more effectively and efficiently,” he said.
Ellis said that, prior to the recommendations that came out of the Fulton IT assessment, the county would have one project ready to be launched and, with the number of county IT personnel and resources being used on that project, there were, at times, concerns the county might not have enough IT personnel or resources for any other projects being launched around that same time period.
“What we needed was better project management so that different projects could be viewed as … new, existing or being planned and this software system would let us know if we had the ability to deliver this a certain project on time with the IT people and resources we had available for it,” he said. “This project portfolio would also let us know if we could move some IT people and resources around if the need existed.”
