Nashville has the greatest scarcity for workers in software engineer management in the nation, according to a new report from LinkedIn.
Tech fields comprised three of the top four most scarce skills in Nashville, with information technology and software engineers shown to be the most in demand compared to supply. Music production and health care management were the most abundant skills, according to the LinkedIn Workforce Report.
“Nashville has a small but rapidly growing tech sector, which is currently constrained by a scarcity of workers skilled in IT infrastructure, software engineering management, web programming, and artificial intelligence,” the report said. “While the supply for all four of these skills has increased over the past year, there is still a skills shortage for each of them due to rapidly increasing demand.”
The skills shortage comes as no surprise to local tech and business leaders who have been seeking to build talent pipelines and recruit talent from other cities for several years.
The number of tech businesses in Nashville has grown by 16 percent in the past year to more than 2,300, according to the Nashville Technology Council. Earlier this month, the council announced ApprenTech Tennessee, a new initiative launching in 2018 that will include on-the-job training, classroom instruction and job placement.
Nashville ranked No. 8 among cities attracting the most workers in the past year, with the greatest influx from Chicago, Knoxville and New York, according to the LinkedIn report. Seattle, Denver and Austin, Texas, gained the most workers overall, and Nashville lost the most workers to Seattle, Tampa, Fla., and Denver.
Hiring in Nashville increased 13 percent in September compared with the same month in the previous year. Nationally, hiring increased by 20 percent during the same time period.
