Work on drainage system at Regal Chowk comes to standstill – Greater Kashmir

Work on the under construction drainage system at Regal Chowk has been halted for past one week severely affecting vehicular movement and business in the busy area.

Commuters facing immense hardships due to scattered construction material and machinery at Residency Road.

Big pipes dumped on roadsides have hampered vehicular movement on the busy road. Shopkeepers said that their business have also adversely affected.

“The work on this project was started few months ago. However, the work was immediately stopped for around two months,” said Regal Chowk Traders Association, general secretary, Farhan Kitab.

He added that scattered construction material at Regal Chowk has brought their sales down as shoppers, especially women, prefer to go other markets than crossing through scattered material.

“Development works are meant to make life of common people easier, boost business and ease traffic in congested areas. Ironically, in Srinagar the development works have opposite results,” he rued.

He said that the work was resumed on the project after two months. “But now it has been around one week that the work has again been halted,” he added.

He added that pipes dumped by the concerned department on footpaths and roadside give a dirty look to the busy market.

“The manholes are open and the drainage construction has caused potholes. A shopkeeper recently suffered fracture after falling in a ditch,” he added.

He said that the association had taken up the matter with concerned authorities. “But our pleas met with deaf ears,” he said.

“The project must be completed at the earliest. Besides the choked surface drain must be cleared forthwith,” he demanded.

He also expressed concern over the delay over in completion of project in view of approaching winter. “There are few days left and we will have chilly days. If the work remains incomplete, there is no doubt authorities will take excuse of winters and the project completion deadline would be extended to next summer,” he said.

He added that the lying of pipes at roadside from financial hub Lambert Lane to Regal Chowk have adversely affected the business in “financial hub” of city.

“In case authorities fail to resume and complete the work shortly, we will be forced to take the streets,” he threatened.

A traffic police official, wishing not to be named, said that scattered construction material has also increased the traffic jams on Residency road.

Commissioner Srinagar Municipal Corporation Dr Shafqat Khan said the work on the project is going on.

“Macadamization was being carried at Polo-View. The work isn’t at standstill. It is going on. However, there were some bottle necks which have been cleared now. The project will be completed shortly,” he added.
